George A. Cardenas
George Cárdenas serves as First District Commissioner of the Cook County Board of Review, where he approaches property tax oversight with a clear principle: public dollars demand public accountability.
During over two decades on the Chicago City Council, George helped oversee Chicago’s multi-billion-dollar city budget, strengthening his expertise in fiscal discipline and regulatory governance. As Deputy Floor Leader and As Chair of several legislative bodies, he exercised rigorous oversight of major fiscal proposals and utility regulation, upholding strong standards of accountability and responsible governance.
Today, that same commitment to fiscal stewardship guides his work on the Board of Review. Property taxes are the backbone of local government finance, funding schools, public safety, and essential services. Commissioner Cárdenas believes the system must be:
- Accountable – Decisions grounded in the evidentiary record and consistent standards
- Transparent – Clear reasoning and public-facing data that taxpayers can understand
- Financially Sound – Assessments that reflect true market conditions and avoid destabilizing volatility
- Equitable – Uniform application of methodology across neighborhoods and property classes
By applying disciplined financial oversight and data-driven review to the appeals process, Commissioner Cárdenas works to ensure that homeowners and businesses alike can have confidence that the system is fair, predictable, and responsibly administered.
Early Life, Service & Professional Foundation
As a young child, George Cardenas and his family came to Chicago in pursuit of the American Dream after emigrating from Durango, Mexico. That early journey shaped his deep appreciation for opportunity, hard work, and the strength of community.
George graduated from Lane Technical High School in 1984 before serving in the United States Navy, where he earned an honorable discharge. His military service reinforced the values of discipline, integrity, and accountability—principles that continue to define his leadership.
Following his service, George earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s degree in political science from Northeastern Illinois University. Before entering public office, he worked as a consultant for Fortune 500 companies, building expertise in finance, operational efficiency, and performance management. He focused on strengthening internal controls, improving systems, and delivering measurable results, skills that remain central to his approach in public service.
This foundation in finance and accountability, combined with his lived experience as an immigrant, shapes his practical and results-driven approach to governance. Commissioner Cárdenas believes effective public policy requires fiscal discipline, transparency, and a steadfast commitment to the communities government is meant to serve.
Commissioner George Cárdenas, who was raised in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood, now resides in McKinley Park with his family.
