The future of our country depends on the education we provide to our children today. Chicago Public School (CPS) policies must be fair and equitable across the entire city. In 2016, I sponsored the TIF Surplus ordinance bringing over $100M to all neighborhood schools. This averted what would have been a second CPS strike. For years an appointed board has failed our students. As a CPS father, I believe it is time for an elected school board. Those responsible for school governance must make decisions on behalf of students, families, educators and residents.
I am proud of the progress made in our 12th Ward schools. We’ve expanded IB programs at the high school level and world class ESL for our younger learners. We built safe places for our kids with new playgrounds, and sports fields. My office supports our youth through internships and mentoring opportunities. We are more engaged than ever. Every year, I am honored to provide two scholarships to help send students from Little Village, McKinley Park and Brighton Park to college.
Our schools are the heart of our community. In 2019, we will work to dedicate a yearly TIF surplus for our schools, establish an elected school board, and bring additional resources to all southwest side neighborhood schools. We will fight until every student, regardless of their economic status has access to a quality education.
