Step 4

Clerk Records and Administration

The Clerk's property tax functions focus on tax extensions, rates, delinquent tax records, redemption services, GIS and tax maps, and official administrative reference materials.

Tax extension and rates

The Clerk's Tax Extension Unit calculates property tax rates for local taxing districts in Cook County.

Tax redemption

If unpaid taxes have been sold, the Clerk can provide an estimate of redemption cost and related records.

GIS and tax maps

The Clerk maintains taxing district boundary records that support tax calculation and extension work.

When to use the Clerk's office

  • You need an estimate of the cost of redemption after delinquent taxes were sold.
  • You need calculations for open or forfeited taxes from prior years.
  • You need a Certificate of Payment or Certificate of Deposit for Redemption.
  • You need access to tax maps, taxing district boundary information, or tax extension references.

Important distinction

The Clerk is not the office that values property or issues the bill. Instead, the Clerk supports the legal and administrative recordkeeping that helps the overall tax system function, especially in the areas of rates, extensions, maps, and redemption.
